Plot summary
Deborah Chandler Clark is the daughter of a mill owner in Clarksville, where Selden Clark IV, a descendant of the town's founding family, runs the mill. Her father disapproves of the pair, and after he falls to his death at the mill, Selden comforts Deborah and proposes. At their honeymoon cabin they find Patricia Monahan, who says she and Selden have been involved and claims he killed Deborah's father and married her to take the mill. Deborah takes off her wedding ring and asks for an annulment. She slips away at night in the couple's car, which goes out of control on the mountainside; she jumps clear and escapes. Believing she cannot prove his guilt, she travels to Raleigh to look for Monahan, who is away for weeks, and there meets Keith Ramsey, an ex-soldier.
