Plot summary
Diana Merrick, Neville Holderness and David Furness were playmates as children in a wealthy British family circle. Diana and Neville love each other, but Neville's father objects to the match and dislikes the way the Merrick family lives. Neville is sent to Egypt on business and to build his fortune. Diana waits two years for him to come back, and he does not. She marries David, who loves her and is a good friend of her brother Jeffry.

- Michael Arlen's novel The Green Hat was judged so daring in the United States that MGM allowed no associations with it: the film was renamed A Woman of Affairs, the characters were renamed, and references to heroin use, homosexuality and syphilis were cut to mollify censors.

In Arlen's novel David commits suicide because he has syphilis, and the Hays Commission excised that plot element during scripting, so the film gives him a criminal background instead.
