Plot summary
Captain Fitzgerald, once a guardsman and now on a modest pension, has three daughters to support. Theodora's older half-sisters hope she will marry a rich man. Theodora falls into the water off the Dorset coast and is rescued by Lord Hector Bracondale, who is young, handsome and wealthy. Out of duty to her father she agrees to marry Josiah Brown, a middle-aged multi-millionaire who once worked as a grocer's assistant. On the honeymoon in the Alps, Bracondale stops at the same inn, and Jane McBride, a rich American widow, persuades Theodora to join a climbing excursion. Theodora slips and dangles over a cliff on her safety line. Bracondale climbs down to her, and the pair are lowered to a ledge to wait for help.

- Long thought lost, Beyond the Rocks was a film Gloria Swanson hoped to see with a modern audience, but she died in 1983 with all but a minute of it missing. A print was found in the Netherlands in 2003 among some two thousand rusty film canisters from a private Haarlem collection, then restored and given its first modern screening in 2005.
- Elinor Glyn's novel was altered for the screen: the film added historical sequences inspired by Cecil B. DeMille's work, and its director, Sam Wood, had been an assistant director for DeMille.
