Plot summary
Neale Gordon, Bill Cunningham and Pedro Blake are pilots who run a cargo route between Chungking, China, and Calcutta, India, and keep rooms at the Hotel Imperial in Calcutta. Bill comes to the aid of Neale and Pedro when their aircraft is forced down in the mountains. At the party celebrating Bill's engagement to Virginia Moore, Virginia breaks the news to the two men that Bill has been strangled. Marina Tanev, a nightclub singer, mentions that Eric Lasser, who owns the nightclub, called the party off on the night Bill died. Neale pulls the diamond necklace from Virginia's neck and presses her about it. He finds himself drawn to her at the same time that he questions what she knows about his friend's death.

- The film's Calcutta was faked with a village street on the back lot of a small studio in Culver City, and 200 Indian seamen from the British Indian Navy were used as extras. Assistant director Herbert Coleman wrote that using that street as Calcutta "was a joke".
- Screenwriter Seton I. Miller said he devised the film's basic idea with a friend, Captain Frank "Dude" Higgs, a former chief pilot of the China National Aviation Corporation, who later died in a crash near Canton.
- Howard da Silva, who had co-starred several times with Alan Ladd, was announced as a co-star of Calcutta but ended up not being in the final film.
- Assistant director Herbert Coleman wrote that director John Farrow never seemed to know how he would stage the action in a new set; Farrow would stroll in swinging his cane, have veteran cameraman Johnny Seitz place the camera, then disappear into his dressing room to be joined later by young, beautiful would-be actresses.
