Plot summary
Kiki scrapes a living on the Paris streets selling newspapers, and the stage is what she wants. Word reaches her that a place has opened in the Folies Barbes revue, so she puts her rent money into clothes and goes to ask for it. Victor Renal, who runs the revue, sends her away because the Agency did not send her. She slips back inside, and in the waiting area another applicant takes her for the secretary and hands over a letter of recommendation. Renal reads the letter as hers and lets her sing, and her voice wins her the job.
