Plot summary
Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are in Canada for a conference on the occult when word comes that Lord Penrose's wife has been killed in the village of La Mort Rouge. The two are about to return home when a telegram she sent before her death reaches Holmes, asking for help, and he decides to look into the case. At the village, the inhabitants are certain the killing was the work of the legendary monster that roams the surrounding marshes, which Watson later sees for himself. Holmes doubts the supernatural explanation and works on the assumption that a person is responsible.
