Plot summary
Marie Allen, nineteen, enters a women's prison after a failed armed robbery in which her husband, Tom, died. An examination at intake finds her two months pregnant. The prison is monotonous and its inmates cutthroat. Kitty Stark, a shoplifter, promises Marie work as a thief after her release and stresses that toughness is what counts inside. Marie is told she may be paroled in ten months, but she sees prisoners granted parole stay behind bars because no employer has been secured for them.

- In 1948 the studio planned Caged as a vehicle for Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, but financial differences intervened; Davis reportedly turned it down over the film's implied lesbian content, calling it a "dyke movie".
- Caged was satirized in a 1977 SCTV comedy sketch, "Broads Behind Bars," with Marie renamed Cheryl and played by Catherine O'Hara as a teenager jailed after smoking pot; Andrea Martin played Kitty and John Candy, in drag, played matron Harper, called "Schultzy".
