Plot summary
George Steele lectures on art in Manhattan and serves the museum as a curator. Museum director Barton has already rebuked him for his sensational style, and when Steele asks to X-ray a Dürer, Adoration of the Magi, to show that the painting is a forgery, Barton turns him down. That night Steele takes a call saying his mother is in a hospital. He catches the last train from Grand Central Station, and about forty minutes later he watches another train bear down on his own. Lieutenant Cochrane checks the story: no wreck is on record, and Steele's mother is fine and was never taken to a hospital. The museum cancels Steele's lectures and suspends him, and he begins trying to retrace the journey himself while the police follow him.
