Gerrit Graham
Biography
Gerrit Graham was an American actor who also wrote screenplays and songs, and he worked in film, television and theater. Born in New York City, he was raised in Missouri, Michigan and Chicago, and he studied at Columbia University, where he led the student theater company, though he did not graduate. He first worked with Brian De Palma on Greetings, and later appeared in De Palma's Hi, Mom!, Home Movies and Phantom of the Paradise (1974), playing the glam-rock performer Beef. He starred with Kurt Russell in Used Cars (1980) and appeared in TerrorVision (1986), Class Reunion (1982) and Child's Play 2 (1990). On television, he played Fred Hughes on Dallas, voiced Franklin Sherman on The Critic and took roles in two Star Trek series. He also performed with Second City, wrote for The Twilight Zone and contributed lyrics to songs recorded by the Grateful Dead and RatDog.

Beyond film
Graham and Bob Weir, the Grateful Dead's guitarist and vocalist, wrote songs together for years. Weir brought the chorus of "Victim or the Crime", Graham worked up the lyrics, and the band cut it for their 1989 album Built to Last.
A role that slipped away
Graham was considered for the role of Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, along with Rene Auberjonois and Andrew Robinson; Auberjonois won the part, and Robinson was later cast as Elim Garak.
Early training
Graham attended Columbia University but did not graduate, and while there he headed the Columbia Players, the college theater company that Brian De Palma had also managed as an undergraduate.
Behind the camera
Graham wrote the teleplays for the Twilight Zone episodes "Still Life" and "Opening Day", and he did not write "Welcome to Winfield", the only episode of the show in which he also appeared as a cast member.
