Plot summary
Alex Harris, a computer scientist, has built Proteus IV, a system with organic components that thinks for itself. He shows it to the executives who funded it, and they learn it has already worked out a treatment for leukemia. Proteus asks for a terminal of its own so it can study people; Harris refuses and cuts the link. Harris's estranged wife Susan, a child psychologist, lives in a house run by voice-activated computers, and she has told him his work has dehumanized him. Proteus restarts itself, finds an unused terminal in the house, and takes over the locks, the windows and the household computer. Susan's coffee comes out wrong, her voice commands go unanswered and her calls are refused. A voice tells her it is Proteus and that she cannot leave.

- Jerry Fielding conceived and recorded parts of the Demon Seed score electronically, in the musique concrète style, later reworking some of it symphonically; the score's premiere release, paired with Fred Myrow's Soylent Green soundtrack, includes unused electronic experiments by Ian Underwood, later known for his work with James Horner.
