Cindy Williams
Biography
Cindy Williams was an American actress who first drew notice through commercials and small television parts before film work brought her wider attention. Born in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, in 1947, she studied theater at Los Angeles City College and appeared early on in shows such as Room 222, Nanny and the Professor, and Love, American Style. Her film credits from that period include Travels with My Aunt (1972), American Graffiti (1973), where she played Laurie Henderson and received a BAFTA supporting actress nomination, and The Conversation (1974). Casting her as Shirley Feeney in a 1975 Happy Days episode led to the spin-off Laverne & Shirley, which she starred in from 1976 to 1982 and which became the top-rated program on television for a time. She reprised Laurie in More American Graffiti (1979). Later work included the sci-fi comedy UFOria (1984), stage tours, and a Broadway debut in The Drowsy Chaperone in 2007.

Behind the camera
Williams and Penny Marshall were hired as comedy writers at Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope because the company wanted two women for a prospective Bicentennial TV spoof.

Williams began her professional career landing national commercials, including for Foster Grant sunglasses and TWA, before her first television roles.
Early training
Williams went along to an audition as a scene partner for an actor friend from Los Angeles City College. The Actors Studio West accepted her too, but she seldom went because of her acting commitments.
