Plot summary
Captain Anthony Vico is the leader of the PAX team, with Dr. Allison Crowley as navigator and communications expert and Dr. William Scott as team physician. Before they left, a swarm of giant asteroids struck the Earth. PAX headquarters moved their space station into an orbit around the Sun that would bring it back to Earth in 180 years, and the crew and hundreds of volunteer personnel beneath the headquarters stayed in suspended animation for the trip. Now the station has returned. Vico, Crowley and Scott wake and set out for PAX headquarters, where their sleeping colleagues wait, with orders to revive them and reestablish the organization that sent them into space.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The TV movie was the third attempt to build a series around the post-apocalyptic future created by Gene Roddenberry; the first two, Genesis II and Planet Earth, the latter also starring Saxon in the lead role, followed an organization called PAX trying to restore order after a nuclear war.
- Roddenberry was closely involved with the previous two versions but is not credited on Strange New World, and character names, along with some of the main points of the concept, were changed to avoid any potential litigation.
