Plot summary
Ellen Gulden writes for New York magazine and returns to the family house to mark George's birthday, which the family has kept a surprise. George is a literature professor at Princeton and a novelist whose book, "Come Back Inn", has gone unfinished for years. Ellen admires him and holds her mother Kate's domestic life at a distance. Then Kate is found to have cancer. George urges Ellen to come back and look after Kate, though the request puts her career and her boyfriend in New York at risk. Ellen resists at first, then gives in. She takes on her mother's care while George follows his own routines, and she tries to keep writing on a freelance basis.
