Plot summary
Barry Gabrewski is an asthmatic teenager in Houston, Texas, living with his widowed father, Jerry. Class bully Randy Cellini and his gym instructor, Horn, make school hard, and Barry retreats into daydreams in which he fights alongside his martial arts hero. He wants to learn karate, but Kelly Stone, a dojo master, rejects him as too weak. Mr. Lee, the sly uncle of Barry's favorite teacher, Noreen Chan and the owner of the Frying Dragon restaurant, takes Barry on as a student instead. Lee's training builds the boy's endurance and eases his asthma, and he shapes drills around Barry's hero worship, making the tasks seem more dangerous than they are.
