Plot summary
A news report describes a strange creature seen on the UCLA campus, and Alex Kominski, an underachieving student, and his girlfriend Cathy Adams are among those questioned. Neither believes it exists, though a hunchback does live in the bell tower, filled with objects he has scavenged, and watches Cathy through a telescope. During a renaissance-themed carnival, Alex gets into a scuffle after insulting another student's girlfriend, and when Cathy steps in, the hunchback comes to her defense. He is chased off and picked up by campus security. In court, the psychiatrist Dr. Victoria Fisk calls him a menace, Cathy says he was only protecting her, and Dr. Richard Webster, who heads the psychology department, suggests the creature could be rehabilitated.
