Plot summary
Vada Sultenfuss is thirteen and lives with her father Harry and her stepmother Shelly, who is expecting a baby. For a school assignment she must write about someone she looks up to but has never met, and she chooses her late mother, Margaret Ann Muldovan, working from a small box of keepsakes. Her father is reluctant to let her travel alone, but he agrees to a spring break stay in Los Angeles with her uncle Phil, where she plans to look for people who knew her mother.
