Plot summary
In Boston in 1863, Elizabeth Whitcomb writes to a "Dearest" she has not met, sets down her hope of finding someone to love, and hides the page in the secret compartment of her writing desk. More than a century later, Scott Corrigan buys an antique desk that a dealer says belonged to a Union general. While restoring it he finds the compartment and Elizabeth's letter. Beatrice, Scott's mother, leans toward spiritualism and urges him to answer it; she supplies an old postage stamp and sends him to a post office that was already standing in 1863. His reply, telling Elizabeth that patience will bring her true love, reaches her, and she writes back demanding to know who he is.
