Plot summary
Park Plaza Mall has installed a new security system: shutters that seal every exit and three robots, each called a Protector, programmed to disable and apprehend thieves with tasers and tranquilizer guns. Alison Parks and Suzie Lynn work at a pizzeria in the mall; Suzie's boyfriend Greg Williams and Ferdy Meisel join them, and so do Mike Brennan and Leslie Todd, along with Rick and Linda Stanton. The friends meet after closing in the furniture store where Greg, Mike and Ferdy work, and while the couples drink and celebrate, Ferdy and Alison watch movies. Then lightning hits the mall more than once and damages the computer running the Protectors.

- Director Jim Wynorski has said he cast lead actress Kelli Maroney partly because he wanted to date her, figuring that putting her in the movie was a way to make that happen.
- The film was test-screened under the title Killbots by its distributor, Concorde Pictures; after it performed poorly with test audiences it was re-titled Chopping Mall, and approximately 19 minutes were excised.
- The filmmakers could not afford the fee for their intended location, the Beverly Center, so the majority of filming took place in the Sherman Oaks Galleria, where Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Commando had also been shot.
- Kelli Maroney replaced Dana Kimmell, who had been cast on the strength of her performance in Lone Wolf McQuade; according to Mitchell, "Dana did not want to do anything that was sexual."
