Plot summary
Twelve-year-old Henry Rowengartner cannot play baseball well, though he wants to reach the major leagues. His mother, Mary, is dating a sports agent named Jack Bradfield. While catching a fly ball, Henry breaks his arm, and after the cast comes off the doctor finds the tendons healed too tightly. Henry can now throw with extraordinary force. At Wrigley Field, a Montreal Expos batter hits a home run and the ball reaches Henry's friends George and Clark in the bleachers. Henry throws it back so hard that it arrives at home plate on the fly. Larry Fisher, who runs the Cubs as general manager, wants to sign him, and manager Sal Martinella tests his pitches and finds they exceed 100 mph.
