Plot summary
Tarker's Mills, Maine, is shaken in spring 1976 by a series of violent murders. Railroad worker Arnie Westrum is decapitated, and other townspeople are killed, including Marty Coslaw's best friend Brady Kincaid. The townspeople form a vigilante group, and Sheriff Joe Haller eventually allows them to hunt after Herb Kincaid confronts him. Curfews cancel the Fourth of July celebration, so the Coslaws hold a backyard party and invite Nan's brother, Uncle Red. Red gives Marty, who is paraplegic, a motorized wheelchair he calls the Silver Bullet, along with fireworks. Marty sneaks out at night to a bridge to set off the fireworks. A werewolf confronts him, and Marty fires a rocket into its eye, then escapes.

- Stephen King asked for a werewolf that was plain and hard to see, unlike the hulking monsters of other early-1980s werewolf films; the result looked more like an American black bear, prompting some people to call it a "werebear". De Laurentiis demanded a change to Carlo Rambaldi's design and both King and Rambaldi refused.
- Don Coscarelli was considered to direct and wrote a first draft with Sergio Altieri that producer Dino de Laurentiis did not like; when de Laurentiis then rejected out of hand the notes Stephen King faxed over, Coscarelli dropped out.
- A modern dance actor was hired to perform the stunts inside the werewolf suit, but de Laurentiis was unhappy with his performance and demanded a change, so Everett McGill, who played Reverend Lester Lowe in human form, acted out most of the werewolf scenes himself and was credited with a dual role.
- Gary Busey felt a kinship with Uncle Red and was allowed to ad lib all his lines in certain takes of every scene he appeared in; Stephen King and Daniel Attias liked the ad lib takes better and put most of them in the final cut.
