Plot summary
John Norman Howard is a rock star whose career has begun to slide. He turns up late and drunk to one of his own shows, plays a few numbers, then walks off, leaving his audience let down. His driver takes him to a bar, where Esther Hoffman fronts her trio, The Oreos. A patron orders John to get up and sing; he refuses, and the argument turns into a brawl. Esther gets him out through a back exit, and they leave in his limousine. She asks him to come back the next morning for breakfast, and over the pepperoni pizza he brought, she hesitates before agreeing to watch him perform.

- Producers Barbra Streisand and Jon Peters wanted Elvis Presley for the male lead and met with him about it; Presley wanted the part to revive his film career, but his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, demanded top billing and a large fee despite Presley not having acted since 1969, which ended his involvement.
- Neil Diamond and Marlon Brando were also considered for the male lead; Diamond, a former high school classmate of Streisand's at Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, had to turn the role down because of his touring commitments, leaving it to Kris Kristofferson.
- Streisand wore her own personal clothing for the film rather than costumes, a choice acknowledged directly in the credits, which read, "Miss Streisand's clothes from... her closet."
