Plot summary
Joseph Svenden is a 47-year-old teacher at a two-room schoolhouse and lives on his family farm with his dying mother. He has a long-running relationship with Rosealee, his best friend's widow, who also teaches there. Since Joseph lacks a college degree, he learns his job will end after the school year when the district expands into town. At the same time, Catherine, a 17-year-old new student, seduces him. Their secret involvement leaves him torn between desire and the knowledge that he is doing something wrong. Facing the loss of his work and the upheaval from the affair, Joseph must confront the course of his previously uneventful life.
