- Frank Sinatra announced in 1960 that he would produce a film of The Execution of Private Slovik, with a screenplay by Albert Maltz, one of the Hollywood 10 blacklisted in the McCarthy era. The outrage, and the Kennedy campaign's worry while Sinatra campaigned for John F. Kennedy, got Sinatra to cancel the project.
- The film and William Bradford Huie's book tell the story of Private Eddie Slovik, the only American serviceman executed for desertion since the American Civil War.
- William Bradford Huie learned from a 1949 Pentagon source of a European graveyard of unidentified American soldiers, and his investigation identified Eddie Slovik's name and grave. His account angered Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had authorized the execution and tried to stop publication of the book.
- Martin Sheen was nominated for an Emmy for Best Lead Actor in a Drama for playing Private Slovik, but said he did not think actors should be compared and made clear he would refuse the award.
