Plot summary
Home for the summer, Maddy finds her stepfather Chet adding an adults-only section to the water park she co-owns. Maddy's friend Shelby swims in Cross Lake with her boyfriend Josh, while Ashley and Travis take their van out to the water; the next day it is pulled out empty, the couple gone. Shelby tries to call Ashley and reaches voicemail. From a jetty, Shelby and Maddy are attacked by piranhas and kill one. Maddy brings it to the specialist Mr. Goodman with her coworker Barry and her ex-boyfriend Deputy Kyle; Goodman warns the fish may travel between lakes. Chet refuses to shut the park.

- Bob and Harvey Weinstein cut writers Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger out of Piranha 3DD because their plans were deemed too expensive; the Weinsteins wanted a low-budget sequel. A scene of a car full of people sinking into Lake Havasu, cut from their Piranha 3D script for budget reasons, was repurposed and filmed here.
- Filming was meant to run from January 17 to February 18, 2011, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for an August 2011 release, but the schedule became impractical because of the cold weather and the requirement for most of the cast to be wearing little or no clothing.
- Rather than converting the film to 3D in post-production, Piranha 3DD was shot using 3D rigs, and it was cinematographer Alexandre Lehmann's first 3D film.
