Plot summary
Lieutenant Mike Harrigan works the drug war in a Los Angeles locked in a heat wave, where Colombian and Jamaican cartels battle for territory. When he charges into a shootout to pull two wounded officers clear, a Predator watches the firefight. Detectives Leona Cantrell and Danny Archuleta defy orders with him and enter the Colombian hideout, where they find the gang slaughtered. On the roof Harrigan briefly sees something cloaked and puts it down to a mirage. His superiors reprimand him, and a federal task force led by Special Agent Peter Keyes arrives to investigate the cartels, bringing Detective Jerry Lambert onto Harrigan's team.

- For the role of LAPD detective Mike Harrigan, director Stephen Hopkins first imagined Patrick Swayze opposite a returning Arnold Schwarzenegger, and met with Steven Seagal, who wanted to play the character as a CIA psychiatrist and martial arts expert; Hopkins passed, wanting an average Joe type.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played Dutch in the first Predator, declined to return for the sequel because of a salary dispute, so producer Joel Silver brought in three actors he had worked with on Lethal Weapon: Gary Busey, Steve Kahan and Danny Glover as Harrigan.
- Predator 2 was initially given an NC-17 rating by the MPAA, and several cuts were made to bring it down to an R rating.
- Fox approached original Predator screenwriters Jim and John Thomas for a sequel; they pitched six ideas, one of which was putting the creature in an urban jungle, and the script was developed in just three weeks.
- The crew slipped a Xenomorph head into the collection of trophy skulls aboard the Predator's ship, something made possible because Fox also owned the Alien franchise.
- Toward the end of filming, a short unofficial music video was made in which Danny Glover danced with the Predator and others.
- Production designer Lawrence Paull made the Predator's ship a snail-shaped vessel whose interior was both technological and reptilian, so that the creature and its ship blend and work together.
