Plot summary
Frankie and Patch work the Great American Carnival, a small show that travels the South. Patch serves as its adjuster, striking terms with local officials and with the local underworld so that the gates can open, and what the show gives up varies town by town. Frankie appears as the Mighty Bozo, trading insults with the crowd from a dunk tank. At one stop Donna, an eighteen-year-old waitress who has had enough of her town, befriends Frankie and, when he invites her, joins the carnival on the road. Patch does not want her there and would rather she left. Heavy St. John owns the carnival; Patch keeps the peace on the lot.
