Plot summary
Cass Brown is a professor at a college in Rossmore, Illinois. He returns from New York, where he could not interest a publisher in his book about the 18th-century womanizer Casanova, and asks his girlfriend, Madge Ferris, to marry him. Before the wedding, a letter sends him to a Chicago maternity hospital. There a doctor tells him that Isabel Drury, his first wife, from whom he was separated by an annulment, has borne a baby girl, and that the child is his. Cas does not want the infant handed to another family. He takes her from the hospital in disguise and hides in a hotel, missing his wedding.
