Plot summary
In New York City in the 1850s, an eight-year-old girl known as Dimples Appleby sings and dances for passersby while her grandfather Eustace, a pickpocket, works the same crowd. An invitation brings the two of them and Dimples's young friends to perform at a party in a grand house, where Caroline Drew, a wealthy widow, takes an interest in the child. Caroline offers Dimples a home of her own, which would mean leaving Eustace behind. Her nephew Allen has been disinherited by his aunt for his plan to become a theatrical producer and stage the first Uncle Tom's Cabin, and he believes Dimples should have the lead. To hire her, he has to take Eustace too.

- There was so much friction on the set that Frank Morgan and Shirley Temple tried to steal scenes from one another: Morgan put his stovepipe hat on a table so it blocked Temple's face and pushed her out of the camera lights, and kept his hands near her eye level, while Temple yawned and scratched her face.
- In the scene where Morgan's character is fleeced by con men, Shirley Temple jiggled the fishing pole she was holding in the background to pull attention away from him, and she worked with Robinson on rhythmic pauses and gestures in her dances to stop him stealing her scenes.
- Producer Nunally Johnson joked about the scene stealing between Shirley Temple and Frank Morgan, saying that when the picture was over either Shirley would have acquired a taste for Scotch whiskey or Frank would come out with curls.
- The Dimples song "Get On Board" was later used by Sony Computer Entertainment for a PlayStation 2 advertisement called "Mountain", and that ad won the Film Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival in 2004.
