Plot summary
Hiram P. Dunn, a small-town Rhode Island newspaper publisher, brings his daughter Susan to Britain in 1914 for a stay of two weeks. Colonel Walter Forsythe introduces her to Sir John Ashwood, a baronet who owns a manor house and an estate. There is some friction over her being American, but they fall in love and marry. Their honeymoon ends when World War I begins, and John, who serves as an army officer, returns to his regiment and leaves for France. Susan and Lady Jean, John's mother, wait for word from the front. John manages a few days with Susan in Dieppe, and during that stay the United States enters the war against Germany.
