Plot summary
Monty Stratton, a Texas farm boy, shows a real talent for pitching a baseball. Barney Wile, a former catcher now working as a scout, gets him a shot with the Chicago White Sox at their spring training camp in California, and the team gives him a contract. On his first night there he is introduced to Ethel, and the two begin dating. The club sends him to the minors for a spell, and he asks her to marry him. Recalled to Chicago, he brings his bride with him, and by the end of that season a baby is on the way. His work on the mound earns him a place among the American League All-Stars. During the 1938 offseason, a hunting accident on his Texas farm puts a bullet in his right leg.
