Mitchell Lewis

Biography

Mitchell Lewis was an American actor who worked in silent and sound films, most of them under contract at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Born in Syracuse, New York, he began appearing on screen in 1914 and racked up more than 175 credits, often in supporting parts. He played Sheikh Ilderim in Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925) and Ernest Defarge in A Tale of Two Cities (1935). Late in his career the roles shrank and were frequently uncredited, among them a Winkie Guards captain in The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Pete, an Indian, in Go West (1940). His last film was The Fastest Gun Alive (1956). He also served on the original board of the Motion Picture Relief Fund, later the Motion Picture & Television Fund. Lewis died in 1956.
