Biography

Margaret Sullavan was an American stage and film actress who started her career onstage in 1929 as a member of the University Players on Cape Cod. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1909, she made her screen debut in 1933 in Only Yesterday after director John M. Stahl saw her onstage. She preferred the stage and made only sixteen films, and her best-known film was The Shop Around the Corner (1940), opposite James Stewart. She earned a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards for Three Comrades (1938). Her other films included The Good Fairy (1935), The Shopworn Angel (1938), The Shining Hour (1938), and The Mortal Storm (1940). She retired from the screen in the early 1940s, returned in 1950 for her final film, No Sad Songs for Me, and then focused on stage work, appearing in Stage Door, The Voice of the Turtle, and Sabrina Fair. She died in 1960.
