Plot summary
In the 1840s, two sisters, Marguerite and Marianne, live in San Pierre, a port town on the island of Guernsey, where their father Octavius Patourel is rich. Their mother, Sophie, once loved Dr. Edmond Ozanne, but her family disapproved of his drinking and his lower social standing, and under their pressure she married Octavius. Edmond returns to the island after many years, bringing his son William, and each sister falls for him. Marguerite is sweet, Marianne shrewd, and Marianne intends to run the family shipping trade. When the clipper Green Dolphin reaches port, its captain, O'Hara, tells William and Marianne about the colony of New Zealand, and his crew find the stowaway Timothy Haslam, a carpenter who killed a man in self-defense. O'Hara believes him and agrees to smuggle the man there.
