Joseph Cawthorn
Biography
Joseph Cawthorn was an American comic actor who worked on the stage and in films. Born in New York City into a family of minstrel performers, he began in show business as a child, appearing at Robinson's Music Hall in 1872. He appeared in vaudeville and minstrel shows, doing a Dutch comic turn with a thick German dialect, and later toured British music halls and American companies. His Broadway debut came in the 1890s, and his first success was as Boris in The Fortune Teller, Victor Herbert's 1898 operetta. He later took the lead in Mother Goose (1903) and played inventor Dr. Pill in Little Nemo (1908). Moving to Hollywood in 1927, he made over 50 films, including Gremio in the 1929 sound version of The Taming of the Shrew, Schultz in Gold Diggers of 1935 (1935), and the father of Florenz Ziegfeld in The Great Ziegfeld (1936). He died in 1949.
