Biography

May Whitty was an English actress of stage and film who first appeared on stage in Liverpool in 1881 before moving to London's West End. By 1910 she had shifted into middle-aged and elderly character parts, and she kept acting on stage for the rest of her life. She went to Hollywood at 72 and made her American film debut in Night Must Fall (1937), which brought her a first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress. Alfred Hitchcock then cast her in The Lady Vanishes (1938) and Suspicion (1941), and she was nominated again for the war drama Mrs. Miniver (1942). Other films included The Constant Nymph (1943), Lassie Come Home (1943), Madame Curie (1943), Gaslight (1944) and Green Dolphin Street (1947). She was made a Dame in 1918, among the first women entertainers so honored, and died in 1948.
