Biography

Eva Mendes is an American former actress who retired from acting after 2014. She started in the late 1990s with roles in Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror (1998) and Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000). Her breakthrough came with Training Day (2001), leading to roles in All About the Benjamins (2002), 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), and Hitch (2005). She starred in comic book adaptations Ghost Rider (2007) and The Spirit (2008). Her dramatic work includes We Own the Night (2007), Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009), Last Night (2010), and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012). Other credits include Out of Time (2003), The Women (2008), The Other Guys (2010), and Girl in Progress (2012). She earned a Golden Raspberry nomination for The Women and an ALMA Award nomination for Girl in Progress. After Lost River (2014), she retired.

    Eva Mendes was cast in her first film after a talent manager spotted her photograph in a friend's portfolio, and she was so unhappy with her performance that she hired an acting coach.

  2. Getting ready for a role

    Mendes said that in the Steven Seagal action thriller Exit Wounds, released in 2001, her voice was dubbed during editing after a producer told her she did not sound intelligent enough.

  3. Big break

    Mendes's breakthrough arrived in 2001, when she played a corrupt cop's mistress in Antoine Fuqua's crime thriller Training Day. She called the part pivotal, saying it kept her acting after she grew bored of "terrible, cheesy horrible films."

  4. A role that slipped away

    Mendes was considered by director Leon Ichaso for a role in the 2001 film Pinero but did not get the part.

  5. Early training

    Mendes attended Hoover High School in Glendale, then studied marketing at California State University, Northridge. She dropped out of college to chase an acting career with Ivana Chubbuck.

  6. Beyond film

    Mendes sang "Pimps Don't Cry" for The Other Guys in 2010 and recorded a duet of the song with CeeLo Green.
