Plot summary

At seventeen, Johnny Blaze takes the demon Mephistopheles up on a bargain: his soul in exchange for a cure for his father's cancer. The cancer is cured, but his father dies soon afterward from burns suffered in a stunt accident. In the present, Johnny is a famous motorcycle stuntman, and a chance meeting brings Roxanne back into his life; she works as a news reporter, and he talks her into a dinner date. Mephistopheles returns with a new arrangement, making Johnny the Ghost Rider and promising his soul back if he defeats Blackheart. Blackheart, the demon's son, is on Earth hunting the lost contract of San Venganza, which binds a thousand evil souls, and seeks the help of three fallen angels.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Ghost Rider (2007)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Johnny Depp showed interest in the lead role in the early 2000s, and producer Avi Arad approached Eric Bana but cast him in Hulk instead; Nicolas Cage, a fan of the comic, then contacted the director himself after learning Depp was a possibility.
  • Sound designer Dane Davis built Ghost Rider's voice by running Nicolas Cage's line readings through three different animal growls played backwards, then amplifying the dialogue through a mechanical volumizer.
  • The film's opening set the President's Day weekend record, beating the three-day mark held by Daredevil and the four-day mark held by 50 First Dates, and kept it until Valentine's Day took it in 2010; it was also the biggest opening weekend of Nicolas Cage's career, replacing National Treasure.
  • For the Hell Cycle, the filmmakers replaced the comics' wheels of pure flame with solid tires covered in flames so the motorcycle would carry more weight onscreen, while Nicolas Cage rode a Buell for stunts and a chopper named "Grace".
  • The visual effects team at Sony Pictures Imageworks created Ghost Rider's fire shot by shot and designed his skull flames to become smaller and turn blue to show any emotion other than rage.
  • Director Mark Steven Johnson's original script had Scarecrow as the main villain, but the studio convinced him to switch to Blackheart so audiences would not confuse the character with the DC Comics Scarecrow.
  • Mark Steven Johnson planned to film before a real audience at Melbourne's Docklands Stadium but instead opted to create the crowd using computer-generated imagery.
  • Spiderbait, a band director Mark Steven Johnson befriended while filming in Australia, performed a cover of "Ghost Riders in the Sky" for the end credits.
