Plot summary
In Banyan Key, a small town in the Florida Keys, Matt Lee Whitlock serves as chief of police. His marriage to Alex, a homicide detective, has come apart, and he has taken up with Ann Merai-Harrison, an old high school girlfriend whose husband Chris, a former professional quarterback, abuses her. Told she has terminal cancer, Ann cannot afford the new treatment in Switzerland that Matt proposes, so he takes $485,000 from money held as evidence in a drug case and gives it to her. A fire then destroys the house where Ann and Chris were staying, and the case becomes a double homicide that falls to Matt, with federal agents demanding the evidence money back.
