Plot summary
Katy Courbet is an executive at the ABN network looking for a way to increase its audience. She notes the crowds that history's arenas and televised car chases have drawn and concludes that people enjoy watching blood, so she proposes a late-night reality show built on Russian roulette. Six contestants would each get five million dollars, and the network's leadership and its advertisers have to be persuaded, while the network lawyer Don puts the case to the authorities. A documentary filmmaker, Rex, who has been filming Katy, makes biographical segments about the six selected: Jewel, an aspiring actress; Pablo, a young gay cook from Mexico; Byron, an aspiring writer; Abalone, a performer; Brad, a recent graduate and surfer; and Rick.
