Plot summary
Grace Gutierrez is a single mother raising her fourteen-year-old daughter Ansiedad, and she is busy with work, the bills, and an affair with Dr. Harford, a married man, so Ansiedad often ends up looking after herself and her mother. In English class, Ms. Armstrong's lessons on coming-of-age stories inspire Ansiedad to rebel. She decides she wants to grow up quickly and become mature enough to move out, and she writes a list of tasks she believes will get her there, with running away to New York as the goal. The first tasks take her to the school chess team and to a nursing home, where she visits an old woman she calls Maud, and then to Valerie, the most popular girl in school.
