Biography

Elvis Presley was an American singer and actor who became a leading figure of rock and roll. Raised in Memphis after his family moved there from Tupelo, Mississippi, he started recording in 1954 at Sun Records, where the producer Sam Phillips paired him with the guitarist Scotty Moore and the bassist Bill Black. Their mix of country music and rhythm and blues helped define rockabilly. After RCA Victor acquired his contract in 1955, Heartbreak Hotel became a number one hit, and a run of television appearances and chart-topping records followed. His screen debut came with Love Me Tender (1956), and he went on to star in Jailhouse Rock (1957), Blue Hawaii (1961) and Viva Las Vegas (1964), among many musical comedies that critics largely panned. The 1968 NBC special Elvis revived his live career and led to a Las Vegas residency and tours. He won three Grammy Awards. Presley died in 1977.

    At 10 years old, Presley sang "Old Shep" in his first public performance, a contest at the Mississippi Fair and Dairy Show on October 3, 1945. He remembered finishing fifth.

    Memphis renamed part of Highway 51 South, the road where Graceland stands, Elvis Presley Boulevard. That year Presley was the first rock and roll singer given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, then called the Bing Crosby Award.
