Plot summary
The federal government wants mountaintop land in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee for an ICBM missile base, but Pappy Tatum will not lease it. General Alvin Donford hands Captain Robert Salbo a seven-day deadline to win the lease or be posted permanently to Greenland. A search of military records leads Salbo to request Second Lt. Josh Morgan, an Air Force pilot born in the same mountains, as his second in command. They reach Tennessee with a small platoon, and Josh discovers a third cousin who looks just like him, Jodie Tatum, a blond hillbilly. Two more cousins, Azalea and Selena, vie for his affections, while Jodie takes a liking to Private Midge Riley. Thirteen mountain maidens known as the Kittyhawks pursue the soldiers who are eligible to marry.
