Plot summary
Walter Gulick finishes his Army service and comes back to Cream Valley, New York, where he was born, wanting to earn his living as a mechanic. Prohosko's Garage gives him room to work, and he restores an old Model T left on blocks under a tarp. He also spars with fighters at Grogan's Gardens, the boxing camp run by Willy Grogan, who is deep in debt and neglects Dolly Fletcher, the woman who loves him. Willy's sister Rose arrives from her office job in New York City and takes an interest in Walter. After Walter accidentally knocks out one of Willy's prospects, Willy decides to train him as a fighter under Lew Nyack, and the polite newcomer is billed as Kid Galahad.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Former light welterweight world champion Mushy Callahan, who trained Presley for the role and appears in the film as a referee, threw all the punches in the close-ups where Presley is struck in the face, teaching him to move his head back so each blow missed or barely touched him.
- Shooting began at Hidden Lodge in Idyllwild-Pine Cove, California, whose forested slopes were chosen to resemble the story's Catskills setting in New York state, but a storm forced the production to move to Hollywood to finish the interior scenes.
