Plot summary
Scott Hayward refuses the plans his father, oil tycoon Duster Hayward, has for him and drives to Florida. At a stop for gas he meets Tom Wilson, a water-ski instructor on his way to a job at a Miami hotel. A remark from Tom gives Scott his idea. He and Tom switch identities so Scott can learn how people treat an ordinary man instead of a millionaire. Tom enjoys the hotel while pretending to be rich.

- Elvis Presley's weight ballooned from his normal 170 pounds to 200 pounds by the time filming began, according to Priscilla Presley's 1985 book Elvis and Me, and a movie studio executive ordered him to lose it in a hurry, which introduced diet pills to his medication regimen.
- Colonel Tom Parker, feeling that Elvis Presley's growing interest in religious studies and spirituality was distracting him, ordered the singer not to read any books while the film was being shot; the article notes there is no evidence Presley complied.
- Clambake was the last film for which Elvis Presley could demand and receive a $1 million salary; its lackluster box office and his desire for more serious films meant studios would no longer guarantee him a million dollars or more.
