Plot summary
Rusty Wells and his band finish a run at a Chicago nightclub owned by Big Frank, and they plan to spend their spring break in Fort Lauderdale. Big Frank extends their engagement, which keeps them in Chicago. Big Frank's daughter Valerie, a college student, is heading to Fort Lauderdale with her friends for the break, and her father worries about what she will get up to. Rusty proposes a solution that also gets the band to Florida: Big Frank hires Rusty and his musicians to travel there and look after Valerie. Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Although MGM promoted Girl Happy as a beach party film and Elvis Presley had appeared shirtless in earlier movies, he never again appeared without a shirt for the rest of his career; in Girl Happy he wears long-sleeve shirts for most of the film, even while water-skiing.
- Girl Happy is set in Fort Lauderdale, but Elvis Presley filmed no scenes in the city. Primary shooting was done at the MGM studios, the beach scenes were filmed in Southern California, and only second-unit filming took place in Fort Lauderdale.
