Tulsa McLean is an Army specialist and tank crewman in the 3rd Armored Division, stationed in West Germany. He sings with a band his buddies have formed, and he wants to run his own nightclub once he leaves the service, which takes money. A bet offers a way to get some: his tank commander, Dynamite, is to spend the night with Lili, a club dancer with a name for being hard to get, who has already turned down another soldier, Turk. Orders send Dynamite to Alaska, and the wager falls to Tulsa.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about G.I. Blues (1960)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Elvis Presley never actually shot a frame in West Germany. Producer Hal Wallis went out in August 1959 to work on the script and grab location footage, and Presley's army double, Private First Class Tom Creel, stood in for him in the shots that made the final film.
- The US Army lent tanks and vehicles on maneuvers to the production and supplied its technical advisor, public information officer John J. Mawn, the man who had run Presley's own military press conferences.
- Dolores Hart, Joan Blackman and Ursula Andress were all screen-tested for the female lead before the part of the dancer Lili went to Juliet Prowse.
- The film's success may have locked Presley into the formula musicals of the 1960s: his next two pictures, Flaming Star and Wild in the Country, gave him the serious acting he wanted but earned less, sending him straight back to musical comedy with Blue Hawaii.
