George Harrison

Biography

George Harrison was an English musician who played lead guitar for the Beatles and went on to a solo career colored by Indian classical music. Raised in Liverpool, he wrote Beatles songs including Taxman, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something and Here Comes the Sun, and he introduced the sitar to the group's sound, beginning with Norwegian Wood. After the band broke up, his triple album All Things Must Pass and the single My Sweet Lord brought him major success, and in 1971 he and Ravi Shankar staged the Concert for Bangladesh, whose album took a Grammy for Album of the Year. He started Dark Horse Records, co-founded HandMade Films, which made Monty Python's The Life of Brian (1979), formed the Traveling Wilburys in 1988, and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Beatles that year and again in 2004 for his solo work. He died in 2001.

Big break
Harrison auditioned for the Quarrymen in March 1958, but Lennon thought he was too young to join; a second meeting on a Liverpool bus won Lennon over when Harrison played the lead guitar part for "Raunchy".
A first
Harrison laid down the basic track for "The Inner Light" in Bombay in January 1968, at EMI's studio, backed by local players on traditional Indian instruments. As the B-side to McCartney's "Lady Madonna", it was the first Harrison composition on a Beatles single.
Getting ready for a role
Harrison began playing slide guitar during a December 1969 European tour with Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, and also began writing "My Sweet Lord" on that tour.
