Plot summary
The Kwimpers travel through Florida with no fixed address: Pop, his son Toby, and the children the family has taken in, among them Holly Jones, who looks after the younger ones. Pop drives onto a stretch of new highway that has not opened yet, and the car runs dry. While they wait for help, they make camp, and when the state highway commissioner H. Arthur King arrives and orders them off, Pop answers that the family is homesteading the land. The governor, there for the dedication, backs the claim. Holly, who has never had a permanent home, is glad to stay. A fisherman they meet gives her an idea: a business for visiting anglers, started with a bank loan.

- While the film was shooting in Florida, Elvis Presley met a 10-year-old Tom Petty, whose uncle was involved in the production; soon afterwards Petty traded his slingshot for a friend's collection of Presley records.
- The courtroom scene was shot in the 1912 Citrus County Old Courthouse in Inverness, Florida, whose restoration was helped by the film because it was the only record of the original courtroom layout; the building is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Yankeetown, Florida, remembers Presley's stay with Follow That Dream Parkway, a major highway opened on July 27, 1996 with a dedication and celebration in Inglis, named because four of Presley's fans pushed for it.
- Richard P. Powell, author of the novel Pioneer, Go Home!, was unhappy that Elvis Presley had been chosen for the role, but after seeing the finished film he thought Presley had performed well.
