Biography

Ringo Starr is an English musician and actor who became famous as the drummer for the Beatles, whom he joined in 1962 in place of Pete Best. He grew up in the Dingle area of Liverpool and played with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes before that. On Beatles records he usually sang lead on one song per album, including Yellow Submarine and With a Little Help from My Friends, and he wrote Octopus's Garden. He appeared in the group's films A Hard Day's Night (1964) and Help! (1965), winning a Melody Maker poll for the latter. His solo work includes the album Ringo (1973) and the hits Photograph and You're Sixteen, and he has toured with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band since 1989. He narrated Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 with the Beatles and again in 2015 as a solo artist.

About the name
Around the time he joined Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, Starkey adopted the stage name Ringo Starr, taken from the rings he wore and implying a country-and-western influence. His solo singing spots were billed as Starr Time.

Starr made his directorial debut with Born to Boogie, a 1972 documentary about T. Rex, after becoming friends with the English singer Marc Bolan.

In 1975, Starr started his own label, Ring O' Records. Over the next few years it put out five albums and fifteen singles and signed eleven artists, among them Graham Bonnet and Rab Noakes.
A first
In February 1968, Starr sang the Buck Owens hit "Act Naturally" on Cilla Black's BBC One program, Cilla. He was the first Beatle to appear on another artist's show without the others, and he also performed a duet with Black.
A first
Starr had said he would no longer release full albums, but Look Up, a country and roots album produced by T Bone Burnett, came out on 10 January 2025. It became the first number one album of his career, topping the UK Country Albums Chart and the Official Americana Albums Chart.
A change of course
Starr and the designer Robin Cruikshank ran ROR, a furniture and interior design company, starting in the late 1960s and lasting until the mid-1980s. ROR's designs went on sale at Harvey Nichols and Liberty of London, and the company designed palace interiors in Abu Dhabi and Oman.
