Plot summary
A gunman boards a San Francisco city bus, assembles a submachine gun pulled from a tote bag, and shoots the eight passengers and the driver before walking away from the wreck. Among the dead is detective Dave Evans. His partner, Sgt. Jake Martin, a sixteen-year veteran, joins the investigation, paired with Inspector Leo Larsen; Martin keeps his own thinking to himself while Larsen tries to draw him out. Evans had been following a man named Gus Niles, gathering information about the unsolved murder of Teresa Camarero two years earlier, a case Martin worked and never closed. Evans' girlfriend, Kay Butler, helps the detectives, whose leads carry them through the city's hustlers, boarding houses, porn theaters and bars.
